Of course, he couldn't get something that looked big and strong, no, he had to get the fluffy thing that wouldn't be able to scare a fly away. Then again, it suited Aoi's personality perfectly, so this made sense, he supposed. Still, though, he didn't want to be caught in a battle with only Calumon to protect him. "A-are you c-coming?"

The Digimon in question looked up at her tamer, bright eyes scanning over Aoi. "Why are you so nervous? C'mon! We can explore, it'll be fun! We shouldn't go that way, let's go this way!" Her chipper attitude was enough for Aoi to hesitantly follow, biting his lip the whole way. "A-are y-y-you sure i-it's sa-safe?"[/color] he managed to squeak, looking over his shoulder every few moments.

"Of course! Besides, you've got me, silly." That... wasn't too reassuring.

They were mostly filled with uncovered bodies – people were so unabashed, maybe even proud of their perfect bodies. It was inconceivable to Mai. However, here, it was different. The beach was full of avatars and every one of them was perfect; there was no reason to feel inferior. He looked at himself, and wondered if he would dare to unclothe himself here, to feel the sun, wind and sea. Clutching at the front of his shirt, he realized that even here, it was not something he would do. He strolled along the beach, holding onto his shoes as he let his toes feel the warm sand. It had been ages since he came to a beach. Hyokomon bounced beside him, counting the steps he took under his breath. It had been his mission to count how long the beach was; and they had been walking from one end to the other. They were coming close to the end and Hyokomon’s voice started to grow more excited. Mai smiled to himself, just thinking how lucky he was to have a partner like Hyokomon. They weren’t exactly similar, but they seemed to make each other happy. At least, Mai hoped he made Hyokomon happy. As happy as a piece of programming could be. Mai tried to shake the thought out of his head. He felt guilty sometimes when thoughts like this came to his mind. Hyokomon was still absorbed in his counting, not noticing how Mai was sadly looking at him. The boy then breathed in the salty air and looked around. There weren’t many people in the game at this moment. Their handles popped all over his vision and Mai waved them away before spotting a name that seemed familiar. “Aoi?” He muttered to himself; and without thinking, like a magnet to metal, he ran towards the avatar that held that name. Stopping abruptly at the person, Mai said, “Aoi? Is that you?” before remembering that almost anyone could own this name here – what were the chances that Aoi would really have a character here with the same name? He looked at the person he just startled and realized that Aoi would not have chosen such an avatar. Immediately blushing, Mai looked at his left and muttered, “I’m so sorry. I thought… I thought you were someone else.” Hyokomon came running behind. “Oi, Mai! What made you run off? I lost count, we have to start all over,” he rambled before noticing the person that Mai was speaking to. He had a cute little Digimon with him. Hyokomon broke into a huge grin and said, “Hi there! I’m Hyokomon and this is Mai. It’s nice to meet you.” Mai’s eyes were still averted, obviously still embarrassed about what he had done. Calumon hopped up onto his tamer's shoulder, her eyes fixed on Mai and his Hyokomon. "What, you know him?!" she said happily, seeming to ignore the sudden swoop of embarrassment that clutched both Mai and Aoi as soon as the boy realized his error. The older man scratched the back of his neck, looking down for a moment. "O-oh, s-s...sorry..."

[/color] he managed to mumble, biting down on his lower lip. It was just a simple error, but he couldn't help but feel like he was letting this boy down somehow.

Calumon noted the change in atmosphere already and frowned, crossing her paws in front of her. "Hmf! Well, if you don't know each other, you may as well get introduced! I'm Calumon~!" She grinned and let her ears grow out, flapping them a few times before gently gliding to the floor beside Aoi. The man nodded to Hyokomon and smiled nervously at Mai. "I-I'm Ryan -- er... A-Aoi in th-this g-game... um..."[/color] He stopped talking after that, feeling his face heat up even further. He had nothing left to say! He inwardly cursed his inability to retain social skills while standing in the stifling silence.

The yellow chicken grinned brightly at the Calumon and said loudly, “You’re so pretty!” Mai smiled at this; and at the same time, scratched his forearm distractedly. Aoi not the Aoi he knew stuttered a quiet apology. Mai took a step back, eyes wide while still looking down. He now felt bad; why did this stranger apologize? Mai raised his head and looked at the older man. Quietly, he said, “You don’t have to say sorry.” His eyes met Aoi’s; and Mai quickly looked away. His avatar was good-looking; and it only served to make Mai a little more nervous. The Calumon flapped her ears, floating down beside Aoi and he looked at her. She was friendly and seemed to be the dominant one between the two of them. Was that how people saw Hyokomon and I? Mai wondered. The man in front of him introduced himself: “I-I'm Ryan -- er... A-Aoi in th-this g-game... um...” Ryan… He was new and wasn’t used to his handle yet. Mai took a deep breath and looked at Aoi again. His face was red with embarrassment and somehow, Mai felt a little pressured to smooth this out. It was his fault after all. He cleared his throat and said, “I’m Mai. It’s really nice to meet you.” Hyokomon flapped his wings again, staring at his training, urging him to continue. He knew Mai rarely ventured a conversation with someone else – and Mai tried, “Well, your avatar… it’s really well designed—” Immediately, Mai bit back his words, regretting what he said. What if he knew? What if he thought Mai was hitting on him? This was terrible – Mai’s face flushed red once again and he stammered, “Well, um, I really like your Calumon. Have you guys battled yet?” With his hand tightly behind him, he hoped things with Aoi would become… better, for lack of a better word. made by kiwii at btn & ote!

I bet you digivolve into something really cool, too. I wish I could digivolve." As far as she and Aoi both knew, digivolution was impossible for her as a Calumon. At least, she was fairly certain she didn't get to digivolve... Aoi blinked a little and tilted his head to the side, a small smile appearing on his lips as Mai spoke. "O-oh, s-sorry, I -- w-wait, s-sorry, I di-didn't mean t-to apologize--"

[/color] Calumon quickly took the cue and clapped her paws onto her tamer's mouth to shut him up. "He said it was okay already, stop doing that!"

A muffled "sorry" could be heard, which only made the digimon groan in annoyance. Calumon quickly hopped off of Aoi's shoulder, floating down to Hyokomon and giving the other digimon a happy grin. "Did you get stuck with a socially awkward one too?" she whispered conspiratorially to the other one, looking over her shoulder at Aoi.

Aoi smiled at Mai's introduction, tilting his head to the side once more. "Y-you too, cher."[/color] The compliment made him smile shyly, letting out a little laugh. "G-goodness, y-you really th-think so? M-merci, thank y-you! Y-you have a w-wonderful a-avatar a-as well!"[/color] Aoi grinned at him in good nature; clearly, the idea that Mai could have been flirting with him didn't even cross his mind once. He just never thought that way. In fact, it seemed to have made the shy man even more comfortable around Mai. "C-Calumon an-and I? N-no, she d-doesn't know a-any moves... a-as f-far as I kn-know, she c-can't digivolve, e-either."[/color] He gave a light shrug. "I-it's not s-something I f-focus on... I j-just like ... p-pretending to b-be s-someone else f-f-for a change..."[/color] Oh, boy, he probably sounded like a freak.

Why can’t you digivolve?” According to Mai, all they had to do was train hard and choose something suitable for him; even digivolutions that were out of reach could be obtained with a slightly higher price. However, this was too much of a mouthful for the Hyokomon to explain and he waited for the Calumon’s answer. However, as the other tamer started to stutter through his apologies and Calumon whispering loudly about Mai being socially awkward as well, Hyokomon broke into a huge smile and said, “Mai’s really improving already! This isn’t as awkward as the previous times.” That was really hard to say though. Mai heard what they had said; and to be honest, he felt like this time was the most awkward of all. When Aoi paid back the compliment, Mai couldn’t help but feel his face burn – but with Hyokomon’s praise in mind, he fought it, looked up and straight into Aoi’s eyes. As he listened to how he explained that he didn’t battle, Mai nodded, understanding that people came here for different reasons. “I… I understand. I’m here… I came here to escape,” Mai replied, biting back the words ‘as well’, because he wasn’t sure how Aoi’s real-life situation was like. He then continued, “No worries if Calumon doesn’t know any attacks. I’m sure Hyokomon will protect us just fine.” He crouched down to ruffle Hyokomon’s head feathers. Hyokomon smiled and said, “Do you guys want to go play in the water?” Mai’s eyes widened again, wondering what the older man would say to that. "I think he wants to help others out a little more first. So I wanna learn a couple of moves!" Calumon let out a laugh and flapped her ears happily before looking over her shoulder. "You think so? Yeah, Aoi's getting used to it all too! Good thing, I don't want my tamer to have an aneurysm or something," she remarked thoughtfully, resting a paw on her chin. Aoi nodded in understanding, knowing exactly what that feeling was like. He liked hiding behind an avatar, something he didn't have in real life. "Oui, I u-understand. Y-you c-could say th-the same f-for me a-as well."

[/color] He blinked before smiling at Mai while letting out a laugh. "Goodness... th-thank you, cher, you're v-very kind. D-don't tell Calumon th-that, th-though!"[/color] Her pride could be hurt, after all. He smiled a bit before Hyokomon walked up to the two of them and asked if they wanted to go into the water.

Immediately, Aoi blushed and shook his head. "O-oh, goodness... n-no, th-thank you though, m-maybe Calumon would wa--"[/color] It was too late, the young white Digimon was already rushing towards the water with her ear-wings outstretched. "Wheee~! Last one in's a rotten egg! ... oops, sorry, that wasn't offensive, was it?" she asked while pausing in her running, looking at Hyokomon.

Upon coming up, water was flung everywhere and he laughed, telling the Calumon not to worry -- "No offence taken; I am an egg, aren't I? And a chicken too." -- and turned to look at the two humans that stood on shore. Pointing at them as he paddled around in the water, he whispered, "Look at them getting along." At the same time, Mai was looking at the two Digimon that were splashing around in the water. In a way, he felt envious. Sometimes he found that Hyokomon was so free -- that Digimon didn't seem to have any kind of reservation. He might be wrong though; he hadn't met many other Digimon. Sometimes he even forgotten they were just AI; Hyokomon's joy always felt real. He looked at Aoi's flushed face and grinned. He wondered if he looked like that as well. "Are you French? I think I can tell from your accent," Mai began. He didn't know if he was going into too much detail into his background. Aoi might feel like he was being probed. Mai just felt curious though; he himself was half-white, and it was a constant burden in Japanese schools. If Aoi was indeed a French person living in Japan, Mai would be able to empathize. Mai looked at the beach; it seemed clean enough. "Maybe we should sit down. Our Digimon don't seem like they would go away any time soon; unless you're leaving for somewhere...?" Mai didn't like to assume that people wanted to say around with him. He knew he could get boring at times; furthermore, although the initial awkwardness has already faded, it didn't mean that Aoi would want to stay. "Ahh, this is nice~" she said happily, looking up at the clouds before turning her gaze to where Hyokomon was pointing. She nodded and grinned. "I haven't seen Aoi really do much with other people... he just keeps to himself. It's good he's finally meeting a friend~" she commented, looking back to Hyokomon. Aoi blinked at Mai's sudden question; he had been distracted by watching the two Digimon play in the water. "O-oh, s-sorry -- ah! Y-you really th-think so?!"

[/color] His eyes were aglow as Mai told him his accent was spot on. "I'm n-not French b-by birth, I w-was born in England b-but moved t-to France a-at a young age... I'm g-glad I have a g-good accent."[/color] He grinned more. Language was his favorite thing to study. He was technically trilingual, but all of the differences between the roman languages and Japanese sometimes got him confused.

"I d-decided to move h-here j-just a f-few years ago, a-actually. I'm g-glad I d-did, though, i-it's lovely here. W-what about you? A-are you Japanese?"[/color] Oh, was that rude? Aoi couldn't really tell, and so he bit his lip nervously while hoping he didn't offend the boy. Mai then suggested that they take a seat, which Aoi happily agreed to. "O-oh, no, I'm n-not b-busy at all. L-let's go sit s-somewhere,"[/color] he said with a gentle smile. The age difference made him feel more comfortable than before -- for some reason, he always felt better around kids; as long as they were younger than he was, he felt the need to protect and defend them.

He sighed quietly with relief; the two males walked together off the beach to find somewhere nice to sit. There was a bench and Mai immediately sat down and stretched out his arms. Nodding at the seat next to him, he gestured for Aoi to sit as well. "I like the French accent. I wish I had an accent like that," Mai said. When Aoi asked about whether he was Japanese, he paused a little. He wasn't sure what to say; it was definitely true that Aoi, being a foreigner, would not make fun of someone who wasn't fully Japanese, but being teased when he was young kind of made it a taboo topic. He took a deep breath, and said quietly, "Well, Aoi," he let his tongue roll out that name once again, "I'm half-American. I'm not fully Japanese." He tried to say it as casually as possible (but his fingers grasped tightly to the edge of the bench and feet pressed hard underneath the seat -- he tried to stop but they didn't cooperate with him). This Aoi was very different from the other Aoi who would hold him and tell him that it's okay to be different that he was special that he will take care of him and fuck those other boys who didn't know what was decent -- and although Mai knew he shouldn't compare, he couldn't help it. The disappointment did fade away when he realized this wasn't him -- but why would he want to meet his friend here, out of all places? He came here to be free of all those confusing feelings. Mai grinned suddenly. "I'm glad you're not like him, the Aoi I know. You're different." He felt thankful, somehow. As he formed a new friendship with a new Aoi, he felt like he could let the other one go a little further. Mai seemed to brighten a little, which made the stress in Aoi's shoulders relax slightly. He hesitantly looked back up at him, his hands folded neatly in his lap. Mai spoke again, and Aoi blinked lightly in confusion. "G-glad...? R-really?"[/color] But Mai had seemed so disappointed that he hadn't been the person he thought he was... "W-well... th-then I'm g-glad, too."[/color] He shifted a little in his seat, not sure of what other information to offer. Should he talk more about himself? No, that was egocentric... should he ask Mai about his life? That was too invasive. Oh, this was so hard...

They were waiting close to the shore, scuttling across the surface of the water. The human and digimon pairs were close by. They were loud beings. The water trembled with their movements, and they scuffled out of it, following after them subtly. A clawed hand aimed for the stuttering boy's leg.

He just grinned to himself, relieved somehow. He looked at the Digimon who pranced around in the water, having fun -- and again, he felt this small urge to run into the water and splash. He only suppressed such an urge because he knew he would regret sooner or later. The sun was bright; and from the corner of his eye, a blue flash -- turning his head, he saw the Ganimon, pincer wide open at Aoi's foot. "Move!" Mai shouted; but without waiting for Aoi's approval or reaction, he pulled the older boy's leg upwards and out of the crab's grasp. Still holding onto his calf, Mai turned to the ocean and called out for Hyokomon. His partner heard his call. The Ganimon swivelled around, his body facing the ocean. Once he knew that the Ganimon no longer had its focus on Aoi, he breathed and let go of Aoi's calf -- and flushed a little when he thought of what he had done. This isn't real, he told himself, even though I touched him, it isn't real. Hyokomon leaped out of the water, wings outstretched, helping to propel himself forwards towards the human pair; swiftly he grabbed his sword and unsheathed it. The Ganimon scuttled forwards and met the sword with his pincers. It became sort of a stand-still, both offensive weapons locked with each other. However, it did seem like the crab had the upper hand; two pincers grasping onto one sword. Mai looked on worriedly -- to perform his attack, Hyokomon had to lift his sword. Now, he couldn't do anything. "Aoi, can Calumon do anything?" Mai asked worriedly; if not, he would have to do something to distract the Ganimon. Hyokomon seemed to be tiring, his feet not used to the sand. And if he lost his sword... Mai bit his lip. "I'm not sure how long Hyokomon could hold on."
