NOIRTIERseventeen | male | player | hope | tamotsu mori The CharacterTo describe Tamotsu as 'ill' is like describing the sun as 'hot' - it's technically true, but doesn't quite encompass the severity of it. He was born prematurely, before his organs had fully finished growing, and was right on the borderline of viability. Born at 22 weeks, it was considered unlikely they he'd make it. His parents, though, were wealthy - willing to put every dollar they could into making sure that Tamotsu lived. Even with that, the doctors told them that the chances were grim.
He did live, but he never quite got better. His organs grew, his body matured, and problems continued to crop up. His lungs were weak, his brain hemorrhaged, and his heart beat in an irregular pattern. Every new issue seemed certain to kill him, and yet he kept right on going.
By his first birthday, his parents were still maintaining their distance - his father busy with work, and his mother unwilling to get too attached to something that seemed to be about to die at any minute. She repeatedly told herself that when he got to go home, then things would be different - but he never quite did.
Surgery was commonplace, repairing issues that cropped up and trying to maintain his heath. He stayed in the hospital, a seemingly permanent addition, even if most of the staff remained hopeful that he's stabilize and live a normal life.
He didn't. At the age of six, Tamotsu had only left the hospital once - being flown by helicopter to a long term treatment facility with better care options. His father rarely visited him, and his mother was pregnant with their second child. Another hemorrhage hit the wrong place, leaving Tamotsu locked in - only having the ability to move his eyes.
That was the end of visits from his mother. It was never said, of course, but she simply stopped visiting - seeing him only once, unable to move, and then never coming back. For all that he knows, she's dead, but his father still wears his wedding ring and hasn't said anything about it, so he's forced to assume she's still alive. His father still visited - generally every week, sometimes every month. He filled Tamotsu in on what he's been doing, how business is going. He told Tamotsu about his siblings - two younger brothers, neither of which he's ever met. In truth, Tamotsu isn't sure that his siblings know he exists.
Even if his father rarely visited, Tamotsu was hardly just left alone. The very best money paid for the very best care - and the very best education that could be managed for him. The nurses would come in and have whole conversations with him, just to keep him focused. They taught him to read, to communicate with blinks. They sat him in with proper lessons taught to children who couldn't leave the hospital, trying to give him as much of an education as possible. When the hospital was busy, they had him watching educational programs, trying to expand his knowledge even more.
Even so, he's still profoundly ignorant. There are huge things that he has no idea about. He's never had a normal conversation. He's never felt the rain on his skin, never felt the wind. He's never stood up, never walked. He has difficulty understanding distances and places - he's seen maps, of course, but being confined to one area for his whole life, it's made it hard for him to understand just how big the world is. He's vaguely interested in sports, but knows he'll never play. Even if he's experienced next to nothing, he stays cheerful - happy he's still going, and happy for the care he's given.
In the end, his isolation was not absolute. For his seventeenth birthday, his father had a surprise - digimon online. His father had poured plenty of money into MAGAMI, becoming a major investor. He wanted a personal pod, of course - finely tuned for Tamotsu's use. His condition had a whole host of complications, but the interface for digimon online allowed him to access the game world while avoiding them. There, he'd be able to walk, to run, to speak. Anything he wanted, all in a fantasy world.
Much to his disappointment, he wasn't a beta tester - simply a normal member, coming in a bit late. His pod had taken longer then expected, but when it finally arrived - well, it was perfect. Already he'd designed his avatar, basing it loosely on himself, and picked out a name. The only time he wasn't going to be in the game was when he slept - or when his medical care required him to be away.
