RONIN47ten | male | staff | anythingbutlight | kouji minamoto The CharacterHis parents bought him an expensive, latest version of a personal chamber capsule along with a copy of the popular online, virtual reality game, Digimon Online. Any ten-year-old kid would be overwhelmed with joy but Kouji was no longer ten.
"What for?" he had asked indifferently. "Are you encouraging me to play video games than focus on my studies? This is addicting, you know."
But both his parents (no, one of them wasn't his parent. His mother died a long time ago.) smiled affectionately.
"We trust you, Kouji," his father said. "You've always done your best in school and participated in a lot of extra curricular activities. Kendo, guitar, bands...we know you're old enough to take care of yourself."
Not enough to live independently, or else I wouldn't be here sitting under your roof.
He stared at the cover of the box, flipped to the back to check for the price but it wasn't there.
"How much did this cost?"
"Oh, Kouji!" Satomi (the woman invited in this house through a legal marriage) laughed. "Don't worry about it! Your father and I took care of everything. We worked hard for it for you."
"And you could have used it for something more useful," he spat harshly. He knew he said something wrong - something wrong, hurtful, ungrateful, painful, wrong - but he didn't take it back.
"Well, you're welcome, SON," his father retorted, steering his shocked wife out of Kouji's room. "Happy birthday."
When the door closed, he was left in the darkness of his room. He leaned over to drop his gaze on the floor, the box falling dully on the carpet floor, and he hang his head in shame.
--- "Is Kouji still asleep?" Satomi whispered over the breakfast table as if careful not to wake their son up upstairs.
Kousei sighed, half-growling on his steaming mug of coffee. "He's oversleeping again!"
"Let him be," Satomi said anxiously. "It's a Sunday."
"He's been always oversleeping, not just on Sundays!" Kousei said, slamming his hands on the table.
"Kousei!" Satomi chided, frowning at his temper.
"Maybe it was a bad idea to get him that game. He's still just an immature teenager after all. I'm waking him up and talking to him this instant."
Mail came in just then with a buzz of their doorbell. Kousei made his way to grab the letters but the second floor rumbled with thunder that was slowly descending downstairs.
Both husband and wife were surprised to see their son sprinting across the floor, still in his clothes from last night and with a tousled hair that had a very rough night.
"Kouji - !"
Kouji ran outside and snapped the mailbox open, snatching something through the envelops of taxes, bills and subscriptions. He tore through the letter addressed to him and skimmed through the letter with speed. Upon reading the letter, he slowly smiled.
"Kouji, what on earth are you doing?" his father demanded, marching right to him. "Get inside! Just look at you!"
Satomi followed right behind her husband, looking strangely at the letter in Kouji's hands. Kouji attempted to hide the letter inconspicuously but his father caught up to it.
"Who's that from?" Kousei asked, frowning. "Show it to me."
Kouji obliged. He handed him the letter and went inside the house, checking what was for breakfast. As he did, his father came marching to him again with Satomi looking anxious.
"What is this?" Kousei said, raising the letter.
"I applied for a job," Kouji said, his voice adamantly calm. He plopped down to a chair nonchalantly. "Can we eat now?"
Kousei pursed his lips. "For that game?"
"Yep."
Before Kousei could form a coherent sentence, Satomi interjected. "What do you need the money for, Kouji?"
"For the game." Kouji looked away. His father was about to open his mouth when he finished, "So I can pay you back for the game you bought me." The RPername the holy mango mistress TAANZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ face claim digimon frontier, kouji minamoto
