Yellow and white lights made shadows outline upon buildings and figures. Shadows chased after their moving masters, not a second glance given toward them. They spend their life running, half the time invisible, half the time ignored. They were useless, they probably knew, but they chose to stay, content to never be alone.
Where summer would never pass, it was always chillier at night. The more Ronin stayed to kill time, the more he reconsidered sneaking out for the night and getting some real fresh air in the park. He was grounded - a sixteen-year-old grounded like a boy of ten who forgot to do his multiplication homework. Ronin had never failed to pass a passing homework, quiz paper, or subject. He never had given his parents the shame of coming over to school to hear of bad behavior...at least when it had happened once or twice, he had gotten away with it. (He figured that if teachers had to call parents over boys having a stand off every time, there would be a crowd by the office every week.) His teachers were willing to give him the benefit of doubt. But when all these academic instances were absent, it seemed to Ronin that parents tended to look for other reasons they could feel in control over their child.
What Ronin would really want from this game right now was a skateboard. He would do something incredibly stupid - maybe skate down a Digimon-infested mountain - and survive. And he wouldn't even hear his parents talk about it.
"Ronin, a player over there had screamed."
"I heard," Ronin replied to his Digimon, Strabimon, who was listening with his ears perked up. He reminded him of his German Shepherd who would exhaust herself out from paying attention to every by-passer in the street. "It's nothing."
"Why?"
This conversation again. Ronin wanted to roll over the floor and breathe dirt in his lungs.
"People scream all the time. It's nothing."
Strabimon looked at him thoughtfully. "How very odd."
A few minutes of reclaimed peace, the scream began to haunt Ronin again. A player with her Digimon had approached Ronin, her face as pale as the moon.
"You're a staff, right?" she asked shakily.
Not having thought they were related at first, Ronin was a little alarmed. "Yeah. I'm a guide. Something wrong?"
Guides didn't have that much place in cities. They dealt with helping players in their first fights. Having problems in non-combatant zones was a rare, usually technical problems or just moments of stupidity. He'd had a player panicking over being unable to log out and raving something about an anime called .hack.
"I saw a ghost!" the player squealed, pointing to the direction Strabimon had. "Is it some sort of event? Or a prank? It's not funny. I thought there aren't any bosses around Asuka, oh my gosh."
"There aren't," Ronin said, trying to be placating but he didn't like panicking players. They often times grated his nerves. "As far as I know."
"So it IS a ghost!" the player declared.
"No. Look, it's late and maybe you've been playing a little too long. You should just log out and take some sleep," Ronin said.
"You think I can sleep after seeing something like that?" the player demanded.
"Beats me." It was late for both of them, okay? "I'll go check it out. If it's anything, you can expect an e-mail from MAGAMI tomorrow morning. That good?"
"Okay," the player said. "But I don't want to log out way."
Ronin shrugged. "Suit yourself. Come on, Strabimon."
He wasn't really planning on checking out this ghost the player claimed to have seen. Strabimon was on a look out so at the off chance there was something, he would know. He didn't need Strabimon pointing out the obvious though as a white figure began to head their way.
It obviously wasn't a ghost, that much was obvious even to Strabimon. Probably just some kid wanting to scare some people.
Wanting to confirm his hypothesis, Ronin simply stood there, waiting for the girl and her Digimon to pass by.
