"..."
Takeru woke up softly, despite the burning of pain throughout his body. It wasn't nearly as bad as he remembered, though he was forced to squint at the slightest movement of his head. The room was dark, though sunlight spilled through cracks in the window shades. He was on a soft bed, one that was well kept and smelled pleasant. On a bedside table rested an open pill bottle, various medical wraps, and bloodied gauzes. Without lifting his head too much, he pushed down the covers to reveal his body, wrapped and covered in bandages.
Footsteps. His heart and body froze for a few moments, nervous that he would find himself confronted by some cold social worker or uncaring doctor. But as he heard the warm, caring voice of his older sister fill the room, he felt a wave of calm quickly overtake the anxiety.
"Hey there, Tak. Glad to see you awake. How're you feeling?"
"Slightly numb, achy. But better than I was. Sis, are you okay?! You look-"
"Shut up. I'm fine. Don't even think to worry about me. I'm the one walking around after all. I'm just glad I got you out when I did. You sure can take a hit though, Tak. Makes me proud."
Takeru smiled, pushing away the recent memories of each blow, cut, and thrash he had taken. He always worried about his sister, but she would never let him. She was strong, intelligent, and his hero through and through. He noticed she was wearing her sunglasses, an obvious sign she was hiding bruises to her eyes. She knew he wasn't ignorant to this, but she also knew he thought it made her look even more heroic, so she continued to wear them.
He let out a sigh and lowered his head back onto the pillow. Though he'd blacked out, his mind was quick to fill in the missing pieces. His parents had attacked him again, Sis showed up, stopped them, got him out and now they were at her apartment. It was small and not the most well-furnished, but it was at last something they both longed for: a home. A safe haven away from a family that had dismissed any worth either of them may have certainly had.
With a small grunt of pain, Takeru lifted himself out of bed to a sitting position. He went to stand, his sister quick to move to his side and support him. He looked at her and the two shared a smile. He'd learned to hold back the tears, to show a strong face even when the gravity of it all was suffocating. It was a skill neither wished to possess, but invaluable, they were sure, in staying alive.
His sister lead them to another room, which inside held a large pod, clearly unmistakable. He turned his head to her, completely lost for words but already she knew what he was going to say and spoke.
"Loans and credit are a beautiful thing, Tak. Not to mention knowing how to save, invest, and stretch a dollar. It took me a while and also cutting corners in getting a place. But it's for you. I want you to shut up, not cry, and let yourself dream. Escape this awful place."
Without a word, he moved, on his own, into the pod as his sister began to start the entry process. He hooked himself in and watched as she, his hero, his idol, his best friend, prepared him for the digital world. As he closed his eyes and the pod closed around him, he heard his sisters voice.
"Sweet dreams, Takeru. It's your time to be a hero. I'll see you soon." ___
He watched as his avatar stood silently and still in front of him, awaiting approval. Takeru smiled at the young man before him. He looked strong, not phased by the horrors of the world. His demeanor was cool and welcoming, yet had so much strength in it. Finally there were the shades, loud and obvious. They were nothing short of a tribute to his sister, yet they were also a reminder to him of how far he'd come. How he'd learned to have courage even when he was struck night and night again and that his eyes and actions would never show fear, even if he was scared.
