How men and animals are obliged to serve her, and how well she has got through the world, barefooted as she is.” – the Finn woman, The Snow Queen She had called him an absolute rose that morning and he told her that she was the ugliest thing he had ever seen. Maybe that was why he ran away: he didn’t want to see her any longer. But she won’t let that happen. She would make sure they saw each other again. He didn’t kill himself. They were wrong. Absolutely wrong.
She lifted up the new pair of red shoes she got that morning. They glittered in the sunlight. Water gushed at her toes.
“Give me Kei back.” Her voice seemed to waver in the wind.
They flew in an arc and made a splash in the river.
They were a present for her birthday. If she gave them to the river, maybe the river will give Kei back. The shoes washed back towards her, knocking against her ankles. Were the shoes not enough? She pulled her skirt higher. Her thighs shone in the sun. She stepped deeper, the river almost knocking her down. Her toes curled, her feet now caked in mud; but she was stable, almost. With a yell, she violently tossed the shoes upwards. Her voice cracked as she said, “I want Kei back. Nothing else matters.”
The shoes were taken away, disappearing under the currents. With hair matted to her forehead, sweat rolling down her neck, she struggled to make her way back to shore; the water gushing stronger and stronger still. She hitched her skirt higher, swung a leg forwards but it was too difficult. She had went in too deep.
The water swept her off her bare feet and at that moment, she realized that the river might bring her to Kei.
The Digimon Online advertisement flashed across the TV screen when she was in the hospital. There was when she saw him. People said she was crazy, deluded and all those other words, but she knew what she knew. Kei was not dead. It wasn’t hope, blind faith or whatever her mother said that drove her forwards.
It was just simple truth: she just knew she would find him.
