There was a lot of work to get started on. She didn't know how much she was getting paid for this. She didn't even know if she would be getting paid at all. She must be, if she was really about to devote every hour of her day to this game. Mariko would have to start at the beginning, of course, and rise the ranks to be the very best staff member that Digimon Online could ask for! Would that be the rank of programmer? Or was it the organizer? Both were important and both came with a lot more responsibility than being assigned as a guide for all the noobs.
This was the first real job she ever had though. Like everyone else, she'd start from square one and find out where it went from there. Mariko would do it wearing that unbelievably bright smile pulling at her lips from cheek to cheek. All those new kids were about to have the time of their lives when she was done with them. To distract them from their real lives, just like this job was meant to do for her.
Being in the game meant she didn't have to deal with her real life problems. She could avoid them. She could avoid her father, her mother, that cute boy who sent her heart racing into a wall and shattering with his disinterest in her. Maybe the people in the game would like her more. Everything Mariko did was for people to like her. She wanted friends, romances, and real family. The kind that cared for her and didn't waste away at the bottom of a whiskey bottle.
The game and everything in it might not be real, but Mariko had always been giddy at the thought of it. It was all those childhood dreams of being someone else, fighting monsters, and teaming up with people anywhere in the world, all coming true. Mariko's in game avatar- who she had given the username Morpheus- looked almost identical to herself. Mariko liked the appearance she had. With a little surgery in the past, she'd been able to make herself everything she thought people wanted her to be. A spunky female.
The one change was age. Something that no surgery or myths about youth and immortality were able to fix. Out of game, Mariko was nearly twenty-nine. In game, she'd cut eight years from her age. She guessed most of the members playing the game would be young adults and teenagers. She needed to appeal to them, and that wouldn't work by looking like the old lady that she considered herself to be.
