Digital media. (Digimon Online)
Experience is a finite thing, and memory is what it leaves us with. What is here today may not be here tomorrow. With Chronicle, Toronto-born artist Finnigan Vinter aims to preserve the moment of the viewer's experience by creating a space in which an experience may be repeated at any moment. An ongoing project, Vinter's Chronicle aims to be a continually growing retrospective of all his works within a virtual reality space with the aid of the MMORPG Digimon Online. From his earliest works to his very final piece, Vinter plans to preserve a digital copy of it all within the virutal space of Digimon Online so future generations to readily have access.
Under the alias Zeus, Vinter will continue to add to Chronicle with each work he creates in the physical world. "I do not think of my work as timeless or permanent," Vinter once stated. "Chronicle is my attempt to preserve it in a form as close as possible to what my work would be like should it be exempt from the whims of time." Physical materials will accumulate damage and age with the years. The virtual world offers a stability in condition that the world of reality fails to provide, and by utilizing the virutal space of Digimon Online in Chronicle, Vinter hopes to create an enviroment in which his works will be seen in the original state that it was intended to be seen in.
On the subject of the decision to place Chronicle in the Japanese server, Vinter states that he also feels that it would be would be appropriate to do so for his first exhibition in Asia. "I have only ever had shows in the Western hemisphere up until this point," he says. "I feel that if I am doing my viewers a disservice if I do not make the show as accessible to the public as I possibly can. With Digimon Online, it will always be there at all hours of the day, so that no one is restricted by dates or anything of the sort. I suppose you can say that my intention is to eliminate the element of transience in both my work and the show itself." As such, we are pleased to bring you Finnigan Vinter's first exhibition in Asia.
- - - - - - - - - "Will this suffice for the description of your exhibition here, Mr. Vinter?" Two sheets of paper stapled together were handed to him. "Mr. Yamaguchi says that he would like to have this finalized by tomorrow at noon."
Finnigan looked up as he pulled his hair back, blue eyes flickering over to the woman who had presented him with the proposed document about what text would be on the walls up for his latest exhibition. It seemed like only recently that he had concluded his last one, but then again, it always only felt like "recently" since a former show every time he had a new exhibition going up. While this was indeed the first time that he had been invited to have an exhibition in Asia (he still had to thank Mr. Yamaguchi and the rest of his company for providing him the opportunity), this had all been on a very tight schedule. That was just how it was, being considered and lauded as one of the living artists of the century. It didn't mean that it wasn't very exhausting.
Sometimes, he missed it. Finnigan missed the simple days, when everything was more straightforward, more blunt, where it wasn't all about formalities. He missed being but yet another boy from the lower middle-class, missed being someone normal who could go out with friends on a Saturday night. Hell, he even missed being an overworked art student who ran on five hours of sleep at best on most nights. Being talked up as a famous fine artist was something that he had dreamed about as a child. Now, as an adult, he dreamed of simpler, more innocent days. Things were more carefree then. Smiles a genuine thing back then, and laughter was given freely. But you had to take what you were handed in life, He had been handed his dream. Therefore, he should've been happy.
"Yes, that will do perfectly, thank you," Finnigan replied with a painted smile as he handed the proposal paper back to the woman. The RPername waffle face claim marvel, thor
