"Kumiko. Call down for me? I have to make a call."
"Alright dear. Hoshi! Dinner!"
"Just a minute!"
"Just a minute", "I'll be right down", "I'll be a few moments". If her parents ever had a dollar for each time she said this, they would have a shiny penny indeed. Ever since they got the game for her for her birthday, their beloved daughter holed up in her room to play. It pained them that she had withdrawn so much as she used to be an avid bookworm who visited the library almost constantly. With a sigh, her parents continued to set the table, though at a much more relaxed pace - plates, check. utensils, check. cups, check.
"Hos-""Hahah, I'm right here."
Eyebrows raised and surprised warmth flooded her parents - their daughter had managed to break away from her game surprisingly early.
"To what do we owe the pleasure?" her mother asked, a grin tinging her words.
"I think I'm actually starting to get bored of the game. It's just not holding the same appeal to me anymore. Most I do now on it is just run around and help out newbies," she explained.
Her parents weren't the most up to date on online game lingo, but they understood what she was meaning - play a game too long and it gets boring eventually but there can be some fun in helping someone new out.
Soon, the table was set and they all sat down.
"Oh! Oyakodon! Awesome!"

"... Wait, what?" She was looking over her email when she saw the title in her inbox. "Welcome to Digimon Online! You have a gift waiting!"
Dig-Digimon Online? No. Way. Hoshi had been wanting this game for... she didn't know how long, but couldn't afford it on her own. Swiftly she tore into the email then screeched happily, her parents downstairs smiling to each other knowingly. Soon came thundering footsteps as the teenager scrambled downstairs.
"You, you didn't," she squeaked, still hardly daring to believe it.
"We knew you were wanting a new game, and we knew how much you love that show, so..." her father said smiling, a tinge of nervousness making him wonder if she truly did like it despite checking with some of her friends about it and her response to finding the email. Excited blue eyes crinkled back at him briefly before screeching happily again,
"It's awesome!" They knew she wasn't very good at accepting presents, but beamed nonetheless at her approval. They had tried to press onto her the practice of thanking the giver when receiving a present, but it hadn't seemed to have stuck very we-
"Thank you!!" Ah, there it was. She thundered back upstairs to look back at the email to double check the information again before thundering right back down to drag them to the Digimon Center.
---Later on in the day---
It took them some time to get to the Center, or rather for Hoshi to get them to actually move and get out the door as they were teasing her with waiting until after lunch to go to the place,
"It will be there later, why don't we eat fir-" "Mooom! C'mon! Let's goo! We can eat something on the way!" They had a feeling that this would soon become her latest obsession and they wouldn't see her hardly at all, but her happiness was just too much for them to take it away from her. For now, anyway. If it began to affect her behavior then she would have it taken away. More than once had a game made her obsessive and addicted, when finally being broken away from the game made her angry and almost destructive. But afterward her actions usually made her feel guilty and she'd hole up in her room to read. Another thing she was bad at in addition to thanking - apologizing when she had done wrong. Hoshi was really good at apologizing when she physically hurt someone slightly, and apologizing well after the fact, but emotional hurt or major damage, that she tended to hide about, subconsciously going for "Out of sight, out of mind".
Soon they were on their way to the Digimon Center and Hoshi was daydreaming about it, wondering exactly what it was like and how the partners got chosen. She had read quite a bit about it but the information had suddenly fled her mind. The ride could not go fast enough and more than once the teenager wondered if they were going only 5 kph. But they were there soon enough and Hoshi restrained herself from bolting in the doors and looking like a fool.
When they got inside, her parents asked the aides some general questions about the game with Hoshi staring around at the inside, various monitors were displaying Digimon and some were displaying gameplay from various players.
"Hoshi. This way." Startled out of her reverie, she looked at her parents and grinned, trotting toward them at a registration dock. Soon everything was done, avatar set up (mom and dad assisted with the look), username picked out: Chevko. Hoshi was going to go with "Chekov" from the old Star Trek reruns, but it was typo'd on the first spelling but remained rather fond of it - it was unique in it's own way. She felt that she wouldn't get tired of that name for at least a while. The entire setup was processed excitedly with input from everyone, even a couple of passing aides and people coming in to get logged in to the system.
Finally with everything set up and a last couple questions to an aide, Hoshi was ready to get logged in.
"Don't worry, everything's perfectly harmless. If she gets too overworked, she gets kicked out automatically so she can de-stress and calm down. It's part of our failsafe system so no harm comes to anyone. And I can also see about moving a monitor to focus on her for a little while so you can check it out yourself. I can't keep it there for long, but I'll give you about ten minutes, okay?" Her parents grinned and nodded at the proposal, thanking the aide for her generosity. Soon, Hoshi was led to the Chamber Room and after hugs, kisses and more thanks to her parents, she stepped into one of the orbs and got comfy, every bit excited for the virtualization process and meeting her Digimon partner.
